From heartbreak, to ice cream to immigration, over 450 new youth-produced stories were added to the PRX catalog in 2012. This year also brought some of the best youth radio stories we’ve heard, which made creating our Best Youth-Made Radio Stories of 2012 Playlist more difficult (and fun) than ever.

Transom Gear Guide, Hooray!

October 30, 2012 in GPRX Blog by Jones Franzel

A great big thank you to our friends at Transom.org for answering the question every producer asks: What gear do I need? Yes, we’ll need to tackle the nuances of storytelling, the ethics of the interview etc. etc. But to get any of that down? We need gear.

As usual, Transom has a thorough review of equipment with an eye to the size of our pocketbooks (small, medium or large), and weigh ins from some of the pros. Producers can decide just what to buy and where to put their cash (hint: headphones!).

2012 NYC Digital Waves Youth Media Festival

Throwing down at the Multimedia Slam

Dozens of youth media producers gathered last weekend in New York for the second annual Digital Waves Youth Media Festival – a day-long extravaganza of workshops, hands-on activities, and talks – all capped off with a multimedia slam and (what else?) a music party/performance/live beat boxing happening.

GPRX Director Jones Franzel offeredTelling A Good Story: How To Get from Idea, to Pitch, to Public,” to help youth producers come up with story ideas, a framework to hold it all together and a plan for bringing the work to the world.  Couldn’t make it?  Check out Jones’ presentation online to help walk you through, and download this handy .pdf worksheet to bring it all together.

Not that there was any doubt, but youth producers are doing some *amazing* work.
