Who the heck am I, anyways?

My name is Minnie, and I am youth-radio producer in Chicago! I participated in a youth radio production internship over the summer, and created a segment, "Desegregation in Chicago Public Schools in the Aftermath of PICS v. Seattle," which was featured on Vocalo, WXLV, and is posted on PRX.org.

I am currently working as a freelance radio journalist for Chicago Public Radio on a segment about ESL/bilingual education in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Hopefully, my segment will be played on the Chicago Matters series on immigration.

My favorite radio stations is Chicago Public Radio, of course! I do love listening to NPR and This American Life. Ira Glass, Nancy Updike and David Isay are my heroes!

Video Game Violence

Review by Minnie B.

Colin Redwood, a fellow Teen Radio Project participant, created a segment on whether violent video games actually promote violence among those who play them.

Teens Grapple with New Driving Law

Review by Minnie B.

Zager's segment on the new provisional driving license is a very newsy, informative story. The story, however, takes a typical teenage-centered perspective, such as why the prov… Continue

YEB Spotlight Piece: My Moment of Silence by Curie Youth Radio

My Moment of Silence

Review
by Minnie B.

Natalie Marquez and Jennifer Martinez have prepared an interesting take on the new law passed in Illinois that requires students to spend a "moment of silence" for reflection (some say that legislators had been pushing this moment of silence as a time for prayer).

The re… Continue

YEB Spotlight Piece: AP Slackers by Heather Tyner

AP Slackers

Review by Minnie B.

Heather Tyner's clear, concise narrative provides an interesting look at AP slackers, students who have little to nothing to do after their big tests in May are over. This is a tightly-packed radio segment and disperses quite a bit of information within that time. However, one of the major down… Continue

Hi Minnie! Argh - what frustrations on funding. Can we talk on the phone next week and see what we can come up with? Would be great to hear more specifically what you need, and then I can think more helpfully (I hope!) about what could work. I'm around Thursday and Friday morning - you?

Heya Minnie! GREAT questions - such a good topic for forum discussions. I'd be more than happy to talk about ideas - either via email or on the phone. Because you need materials immediately, I think local may be the way to go. Have you contacted Sarah Levine at Curie Youth Radio for Chicago leads? Or Vocalo?

It is SUPER exciting that you're taking this on, and 100% possible. Let's figure out a time to brainstorm...

I should ask first - do you prefer to go by Minhal, or Minnie? Inquiring minds etc. etc....

Now on YouthCast

A Unique Sound

What Intrigues YOU?

Jones Franzel sent me an email the other day; she wrote: "Wanted to send you this review of YouthCast on the Sound of Young America..."  I decided to check it out.  It's a post "Podthoughts" by Colin Marshall about podcasts offered on alt.NPR.  In the post, Colin talks about YouthCast.  Here's a quote: The neat thing is that the pieces are made by high-school- or college-age producers. The less neat thing is that I once again find myself having to break out the term "This American Life-y", which I apply to a regrettably high number of shows.

That made me think...how can we differentiate our style? I have much respect for Ira Glass, but I'm also an advocate for uniqueness. So, what do you think about our podcasts?

Please feel free to share your "Podthoughts!"
