Youth EB Picks: Shishmaref Lives

Climate Change in Shishmaref, Alaska from Alaska Teen Media Institute

The Alaska climate change is a major topic. With the state located so close to the ocean, most of the houses and the city of Shishmaref is in ruins because of the drastic changes. Houses are in pieces and the natives are trying to figure out a way to piece their lives back together.

If we – like the natives in  Alaska - could realize what the climate change is doing to us, we could be just as informed and able to help others realize what is happening to our world: that the climate change is taking over. We can all learn from the Alaskans how to recognize and react to the dramatic climate changes in the world.

I loved this piece because it shows how at least one part of this world is showing how caring they are to the planet and their surroundings. We should all follow their example and see that when life's changes come our way, we should work together as a community and embrace what Mother Nature brings to us each day.
